Hang on tight and welcome. I am a Registered Nurse working in a large teaching hospital somewhere in the Eastern half of the country. We have a lot of shiny awards and certifications from alphabet soup agencies, that get plastered all over the place in the hopes that we will be impressive enough to earn great Press-Ganey results. I confess, we do give great care, but Press-Ganey almost never reflects our quality of care, because out of the hundred of thousands of patients walking through our doors, a miniscule amount fill out the survey. Those that do typically fill it out, do so because of a complaint, which gets the suits all riled up. Don't get the suits riled up or else they start coming into the trenches like they know what the hell is going on and generally muck up the process, causing more low Press-Ganey scores. It is a vicious cycle that even my magic has a hard time taming.
Some people want to know why I call nursing magic. Not to diminish the science and skill involved, lord knows many of us have incredible amounts of skill backed up evidence, but many times when you do what nurses do, with the resources that we do it with, for the population that we do it for, and it is clear that many of us are magicians on par with Houdini.
Thanks for stopping by and enjoy the ride.
